Bike coop model – any for cars?

Met last night and heard about “bike bike!” with its 150+ participants sharing the vagaries of assorted bike-coop type organizations.  We read a few mission statements, and duly noted that the idea of “affordable transportation” kept coming up, which made me wonder on the way home…

… we are a car-dependent culture.  People even say it out loud – the dang things are “necessities.”  So why are there not charitable enterprises set up to make sure people have these empowering devices?

Could it be the liability – the other fact that if you give me a car, you add a heck of a lot of risk to my life?  Or are the reasons economic?

  1. Isn’t Zipcar a coop of sorts?

  2. Hmmm… yea, a “shared car” version – but not the “we’ll help you fix up this junker so you have a ride” or “we resurrect dead cars for people who need them.”
