C=U Across the Prairie

July 31, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Welp,  of course we’re short on volunteers  – but we just made reservations for the party at Jupiter’s for volunteers.  I think I’ll hit on my student workers who like free meals ;)    And Minneci’s is doing lunch, hooray!  And my zipcard came so soon as I activate it I *could* conceivably have a car for weird stuff.

I finished my letter to go to WICD (informing them what “close to the right as practicable” means) tho’ not sure exactly how to deliver the message and who to cc. Just went out and did the 6-mile loop-and-tag that got me addicted to cycling strongly.  (Makes for almost 10 mies counting getting out to Windsor and Race.)  Now time to tackle more of the Heinous List of Crap To Do for CUAP … with the motivation of “get done soon and you can go fast again!”  I definitely *haven’t* been riding fast much… my lungs are informing me of that now ;)    I can blame it on my competitive nature, since there’s a bikejournal.com competition for spending the most *hours* on the bike, and while I’m not in the top five, I’m in the top ten…

Compare and Contrast

http://illinoishomepage.net/content/fulltext/?cid=94661 – channel 3’s response to bicycle crash

http://www.wicd15.com/newsroom/top_stories/videos/wicd_vid_621.shtml  — something a bit positive from channel 15

http://www.wicd15.com/newsroom/top_stories/videos/wicd_vid_612.shtml  —   wobbly  sidewalk rider  who still got hit  “just riding on the sidewalk.”  Yet another anecdote indicating that we don’t belong there, dudes, but implied is that we all should stick to sidewalks and paths.

(and of course, the execrable, dangerous and WRONG http://www.wicd15.com/newsroom/top_stories/videos/wicd_vid_625.shtml )

… oh, I’ll edit the links p’rapsh in a bit…

So… it’s goin’ around, eh?  I just want to render them immobile — they’d be fine for parties and quiet chit chats and romance.

Channel 15

July 28, 2009 · 3 Comments

Just saw the blurb from last week’s post-traumatic-Thursday news on channel 15. The reporter tells us we can “learn” from those accidents.

Have to say the strong, clear message is:  “If you’re going to insist on taking your right to ride [where you don't really belong], stay out of the way and do everything you can to make it easier for drivers.”

Then the misinformed and irrelevant recitation of “safety advice for cyclists,” none of which would have helped the injured and dead cyclists.  Riding on the sidewalk is hardly not far enough to the right.

Repeated emphasis on “close to the curb as possible,” by councilman La Due, who I had thought knew better, and even misquoting the law as stating that we have to “try to be” as close to the side “as possible.”  Even better (note: sarcasm) was asserting that the car has just as much right to the lane,   too easily be interpreted as “so it’s your responsibility to get OUT OF THE WAY so they can get past”  (and that they have the right to be inthesamelane *at the same time*) … of course, not word one about the 3-feet that cars are required to give bicycles. It’s the right side of the *lane,* by the way, not the curb.  Parking lanes… right turn lanes…

So, channel fifteen and Michael La Due, you mis-state the laws about what cyclists are required to do and ignore drivers’ laws and responsibilities.  Thanks for nothing.

As far as the visuals of cyclists. starting with the guy on the cell phone:  Did they go out and grab footage that day and this is typical stuff? I  It is exactly the kind of cyclists-wandering-everywhere that gives ‘em a bad name… but it’s an expected response  given the roads and paths   (See Gary Cziko’s photos of hazards),  and clues and information are sparse.

The fact is that simply saying “follow the rules” doesn’t really work, and the people hurt and killed *were,* in fact, following the “rules of the road.”  Sherry *had* moved over and there was plenty of room … the driver simply mowed her down anyway.  (3 foot law?) The other two folks were on the sidewalk on the *other side* of the curb, dudes.   So why say “there were accidents — cyclists, get to the right!”  — I know why.  You want us to Go Away.

So, just to say it because you can’t say it enough:  riders are *more* visible further out in the lane.   I am not further from teh curb than possible because I am Wanting To Assert My Rights.  I’m out there because IT IS SAFER.

As the Safe Routes to School folks say:  Engineering, Enforcement, Education and Encouragement.  This report helped None Of The Above.  (The reporter:  Bret Buganski, bbuganski@wicd15.com )

This would:

Under state law, bicyclists must travel as far to the right as practical, but practical is in the eye of cyclists, who may move farther into a traffic lane to avoid hazards, such as broken pavement, storm grates, shattered glass and parked cars. Cyclists also may move closer to the center of narrow lanes to avoid being passed too closely.

Although some motorist would like cyclists to be always at the right edge, it’s generally accepted that cyclists are safer and become more visible to motorists when then ride a little more into the street. Motorists should not think the cyclists are moving to their left, closer to the motorists’ path, just for the sake of irritation, but for safety reasons.

The acorns are dropping and I heard squirrels – several of them – discussing how bad this winter is going to be, and to get ready.

Construction on White near First means I have to work around it… went South to Springfield today but I t hink I will do John Street tomorrow.

magic engine killer rays…

July 27, 2009 · Leave a Comment

… on a tangential search, I found a News-Gazette article describing Champaign’s decision to up the fee for getting a car out of impound. Prob’ly not so many SUVs or trucks, since more expensive vehicles are somewhat mroe likely to be driven by people who coudl afford the extra.

Notable quote, tho’ at least from an attorney, whose job it is to spin reality so hard it skewers itself:

“You’re taking somebody’s home when you take somebody’s car,” Dobrovolny said.”

Do what now?

Riding the folder today because it begged me to.  The completely nasty pavement is so nice and bouncy :) Made me ponder studding those tires, tho’ the *big* drawback is that man, the Gazelle is so encapsulated that I don’t have to do cleanup after every ride, even in execrable conditions.  Still, I feel nekkid and vulnerable without a horn or at least a bell… but I can holler real good.

This news is  from Asheville NC about an off-duty firefighter, “concerned” about a dad riding on a busy road with his toddler on the bike behind him, shot him in the head… the helmet deflected the bullet so there was no injury.  It sets stereotypes of Southern Good Ol’ Boys etched too deeply, especially when the comments reveal that there was a similar smelling incident very recently involving a deputy sheriff.    However, the fact that there were no more than the normal “cyclists are pigs” comments speaks well of said southern culture and, in general, there were more than the usual number of untrolly comments.

sultry saunter

July 25, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Actually, it was a whole 64 degrees or so, but I think the dew point was the same., or somebody put… I dunno, quaaludes in the  air ’cause it was a low turnout but all regular riders who by now are in pretty good shape… and I looked back to see Rich and I had dropped the rest of the group, going 13 mph.  So, not only was the group going a truly “level 1″ pace, but nobody sped up when the two of us did.  The last time I remember that happening we were under heat advisories.

Keeping Fat Cyclist in thoughts and prayers…  it’s a long journey.

How did I miss this?  3-D art of a canyon put into the multi-use path to slow cyclists down…

Kirby and sidewalks…

July 24, 2009 · Leave a Comment

… here’s from the coop list,,, a picture of the sidewalk where the kid got trapped under the SUV — he’ll be in hospital for another *week* … sounds like burns and bones and scars… Can we say NEED SOME INFRASTRUCTURE CHANGE????

Sidewalk

There were other pictures that sort of almost conveyed how blind a situation this was for cyclist and driver.  YES, we need to be more aware of these things… (gotta say that coming back on Windsor from my lil’ century today I was all kinds of aware of potential conflicts — that somebody could clock me from behind like Sherry got clocked, or that people wouldn’t see me…  one driver went over and backe dup and the other more happily stopped *and* waved me through to show it wasn’t coincidence that he’d stopped)… but that kiddo could be out riding today if there were safe ways for him to get around… and that’s what he thought he’d be doing this summer, not… okay, we’ll stop the drama but you get my drift.

Photos from today’s lil’ century

July 24, 2009 · 3 Comments

I spent a fair amount of time on this ride a teeny bit lost – and GPS couldn’t find a satellite – and in the “you know you’re addicted to cycling” category, honestly, my thought was “oh, goody!  more miles and different roads!”  Yea, I made sure I had water and crackers… and reflected that yes, I *could* get too lost and get hungry or overheated or  dehydrated or otherwise road stupd…

but I didn’t :)

Went to Mahomet – via “the hobbit house” – first pic …P5240227.JPG

yea, the road is still a bit gravelly there but it’s mostly beaten down.   Then I stopped at Casey’s for provisions so I could ride like Lance.

P5240228.JPG

The park was rully purty in the morning

P5240229.JPG

Crossed the covered bridge – that nice fellow has a happy, happy dog in the trailer.

P5240231.JPG

Once off the paths it’s onto the roads… rather nice roads…

P5240233.JPG

Doesn’t this make you want to go on the ride?  C-U Across the Prairie…  I revised the route to dodge some gravel and picked up this yard festering with lilies and daisies and … whatever these are.  In fact, the whole bloomin’ ride was festering with flamboyance.

P5240235.JPG

After this last pic I focused more on riding (if you haven’t guessed, I’m a “text” person.  I tend to take pictures of horses behind poles becaues I know the horse is there…) – speculating on the nature of “Custom Garage VBS.”  Jesus is everywhere…
